Maps, particularly those produced by the Ordnance Survey, can be an invaluable aid to tracing your family history and learning more about the environment in which they lived. Large scale OS maps will often show individual houses and other buildings and if you already know where your ancestor lived from documents such as census returns, certificates or directories, it is sometimes possible to pinpoint the exact house in which they lived. Maps are vital for indicating the type of town or village in which your family lived and giving a picture of major local employment factors, such as gas works or factories, and also for indicating where your ancestor may have gone to shop or relax.
Sometimes you may have a place of birth named on a census return but be unable to locate it. It is often vital to locate the place of birth in order to continue your research, as you need to know where to look for your ancestor’s birth or baptism. Unfortunately some places can prove hard to locate as names may change or small hamlets disappear over the course of time. Sometimes a place will be hard to find because the census enumerator made a mistake or mis-heard the name. Similarly street names change and streets are demolished. These factors sometimes make locating the place where your ancestors lived or were born very difficult, and it is here that Heritage Family History can help you. We have a large stock of reference maps and search aids and our expert Map Man is here to help locate those hard-to-find places for you.
