Writing

Tracing Your Ancestors Through Death RecordsMy book, Tracing Your Ancestors Through Death Records was first published in February 2013. It proved to be a best seller and in 2014 I revised and updated it for a second edition which came out in April 2015.

Since then I have written two further books. The first, Researching and Locating Your Ancestors, is a general guide to tracing your family history (published by Discover Your Ancestors November 2015) and the second was privately published a history of the Reed family, owners of William Reed Business Media and publishers of the well-known trade journal, The Grocer.

Magazine Articles

I am a regular contributor to national family history magazines such as Family Tree Magazine, Your Family History Magazine, Discover Your Ancestors and Who Do You Think You Are Magazine. I also write a popular column, entitled Heritage Corner, for the Kent Family History Society Journal.

One of my recent articles was an assessment of online genealogy source citations for Relatively Speaking, the quarterly journal of the Alberta Genealogical Society, (February 2016, volume 44, number 1).

TV, Radio and Webinars

I very much enjoy radio and TV work and for many years had a regular genealogy phone-in on BBC Radio Kent while I have also been heard more than once on BBC Radio London's Sunday morning show. I took part in Digging Up Your Roots for BBC Radio Scotland and broadcast two live webinars for the Society of Australian Genealogists, both of which proved to be very popular!

I also worked for the TV production company Shine TV – researching a program on surnames and presenting the accompanying 'Sizzle'.

In September 2016 I filmed a short interview with Gyles Brandreth for the BBC's The One Show. We discussed the impact of the Norman invasion on surnames in England in the light of the I Am a Norman photographic exhibition in Hastings. This is due to be broadcast on Thursday 13 October.
